Lydia began training as a child in KUGB karate in the 1980s at the Ipswich Karate Club under Sensei Alf Hatton and Sensei Wai-Yin Hatton. She graded Shodan under Sensei Enoeda in 1987.
After a long break, in 2006 Lydia started training again with the Stevenage Karate Club, and was glad to find such a strong club with high standards of teaching under Sensei Tom Peebles. She was encouraged to train for her Nidan grading, which she passed in August 2008.
In order to gain competition experience as an adult she competed in the 2008 UK National Championship and in the Stevenage club competition in 2010. She acted as a judge in the 2010 UK National Championship.
Lydia passed JKA England Level 3 Instructor and Referee exams in February 2010, and Level 2 Instructor and Referee exams in February 2011.
