Children’s Karate Classes in Stevenage

Confidence, concentration and a place to belong

Shotokan karate for children aged 6+ — complete beginners welcome.

Karate can give children much more than physical exercise. It can help them build confidence, improve concentration, make friends and experience the satisfaction of learning new skills.

Our junior classes provide a friendly, structured environment where children can learn at their own pace with support from experienced instructors.

Beginner class timetable

Monday: 6:00pm–6:30pm

Thursday: 6:00pm–6:30pm

Our beginner sessions give new students a dedicated introduction to karate before they progress into longer graded sessions as their experience develops.

Every child starts somewhere

Your child does not need to be sporty, confident or experienced before joining. We regularly welcome children who are completely new to karate, including children who may initially feel shy or unsure.

Our instructors focus on helping each student feel comfortable, understand what they are doing and make progress at a pace that suits them.

We support children with a range of different needs and abilities, including children with Special Educational Needs, and adapt our teaching where appropriate.

Why parents choose karate for their children

Build confidence

Children see tangible progress as they learn techniques, overcome challenges and work towards new grades.

Improve concentration

Karate requires children to listen, focus and respond to instructions in a structured environment.

Get active

Training develops coordination, balance, fitness and flexibility without relying on traditional team sports.

Learn discipline and respect

Children learn that progress comes through effort, patience, consistency and respect for others.

Make friends and belong

Students train together, support each other and become part of a friendly club community.

What happens in a junior karate class?

Junior training is structured around the core elements of Shotokan karate and is adapted to the age and experience of the students. Sessions develop:

  • Fundamental karate techniques
  • Movement, balance and coordination
  • Kata and technical sequences
  • Controlled partner work appropriate to age and grade
  • Listening, focus and dojo etiquette

Beginners are taught the foundations step by step and are not expected to know anything before they arrive.

A safe and supportive environment

Enhanced DBS checks: Our instructors undergo enhanced DBS checks.

Safeguarding: We follow JKA England safeguarding procedures and have a designated Club Welfare Officer.

Paediatric First Aid: Our instructors are trained in Paediatric First Aid.

Support for individual needs: We aim to provide an inclusive environment and adapt teaching where appropriate.

Your child's first class

Starting a new activity can feel daunting, particularly for younger children. We aim to make the first session relaxed and straightforward.

Your child will be introduced to the instructors and guided through the lesson. There is no expectation that they will already understand karate terminology or techniques — the whole point of the first class is to help them get started.
